As others have said, Edmonton taxpayers invested in a new arena and there has been some returns thus far with increased economic growth generated by the arena, which has trickled into surrounding areas.
I attended a concert in Edmonton last summer at the old arena.... All I can say is they needed that arena desperately.
I am optimistic the taxpayers will be happy with their investment when all is said and done.
Calgary can be successful too in my opinion.
I am strongly against corporate handouts. Should the deal cost the taxpayers and be seen as yielding a negative return, pass on it.
Do the math, analyze returns, and make an educated decision. No need to be at the mercy of the flames organization..... As others have said they have handled this very poorly.
localized development is a horrible argument for subsidizing arenas. literally any other part of town can get a facelift and be more attractive for businesses and residents alike with hundreds of millions of dollars for free. in fact, if you're a resident concerned about affordability, pandering to major sports/arenas is the absolute worst because not only it's a huge taxpayer sinkhole but it will also bring in yuppies and tourists to make your rent go up and encourage your neighbors to airbnb their units.
