Guys. Katz took Gretzky and went to Seattle and talked about an arena there.
Posturing. Being an oilers fan, this is fun to watch. But unrealistic.
Oilers 10 years in the basement and we still turn big profits every year. Without playoffs.
And oilers didn't move.
Correct me if I'm wrong but, I'm sure that Bettman had to sign off on any relocation. He'll get involved shortly now and mediate this process.
Some of you may think edmonton got skewered on our deal but there has been 2 billion that has been invested into the surrounding area around the arena.
Calgary wants to host the World Cup in 2026? And won't budge on something like this??
I think Nenshi is being intentionally hard headed because of how the Flames are negotiating, or frankly not even negotiating. Threatening to take your ball and go home isnt a negotiation, it's an ultimatum. Give us our new rink or cya later. The thing is, it isnt realistic because as you mentioned there is no chance the franchise gets moved. It makes the Flames look ridiculous to anyone who understands hockey but KK is trying to get the average hockey fan upset and vote Nenshi out in October.
The way the Flames approached this new arena deal is just pathetic. They came to the city with a $1 billion ++ project during a downturn with their hands extended looking for money. Didn't even PROPOSE another location or project until a few months ago when they gave what I feel is a way more realistic arena project. But likely with the multiple threats of leaving and already likely damaging negotiations between the city and province by starting with such an unrealistic project is what has hampered this new proposal from getting any funding.
Overall I'm not happy with how the Flames organization has handled this. Constant threats of moving and started by presenting what was a very unrealistic project. I'm not gonna say I wont be a fan of the team because that isnt true but I'm fairly unhappy with how they have handled it.
We can debate all day long how much public funding should be given, personally I dont think it should be much at all because with the new rink will come increased ticket cost, vendor costs, parking cost, etc. The majority of my complaints are just how the Flames have handled this.
