They changed the rule a few years ago, it actually used to be worse. Before you could get first possession and just win with a field goal. Now if you get a field goal, the other team has a chance to match or beat.


They don't want multiple overtimes I think because they want to limit time played over the season (fatigue, injuries, etc.) that's why they have ties if nobody scores in OT.
