Defensive dmen make less, it's just how the league is. Pelech is on his 3rd contract and with the cap rising its about the same % as tanev, vlasic in their prime/3rd contracts. Pelech is actually on the higher side.

At this rate Hughes is going to be part owner of the Canucks by the time we resign him.

8 year deal with huge salary has been set as the norm for first pairing defenders.

Teams can not afford to let a key asset walk for no return so they are forced to resign for huge numbers.

Was looking at stats.

One thing I did not Realize about Nurse. He scored 15 out of his 16 goals even strengh.

More than any other defenseman. That alone makes the contract look better.

A lot of defenseman can score on the powerplay or pick up secondary assists on special teams but very few can score 5 on 5.

He’s a work horse, the main reason this contract sucks is because we didn’t lock him up 2 years ago when he was asking ~6.5 to 7. It seemed obvious to me at the time he was going to be worth legit first pairing money, and if Broberg made him expendable it would be an easy contract to move.

Who were his (Nurse) benchmark/comparables to get a ticket like that??

There has been a lot of huge contracts signed by defenseman recently.

Jones, Weresnki, Makar, Hamilton have all signed recently long term in the $9 million range.

Perhaps I am missing someone but those are the bug ones who have signed recently.

Yea, I guess I just value those players more I guess

Last September I would have never thought nurse would sign a bigger contract than Makar.
