Mental gymnastics. There's never a good time to give out bad contracts - only exception would be if it's like the one piece you need to put yourself over the top where the Cup(s) will justify it.
Agree to disagree. That's a very unrealistic expectation to have IRL. By that logic, only serious contending teams like Avs, Vegas, Tampa can afford to give out bad contracts to put them over the top, except as soon as they do, they stop being godtier. Leafs is a great example, they thought getting tavares is putting them over the top,but it turns out it's just a bad contract and they're further away to the cup from the other 3 teams mentioned. Tampa is way over cap, and they can't afford to give a bad contract to put them over the top, Vegas signed Pietrangelo (will be a bad contract eventually, had to move out schdmit tho) to put it simply, none of those teams NEED to give out a bad contract to put them over the top, it'd actually be the opposite. You want a good chance of winning the cup with us? take a discount.
Bad teams are most likely able to afford and offer bad contracts because they know the team isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and they need someone stable to fill out the roster in the meantime. Plus the only way you can attract players to your shit team over better teams is by term/money.
Benning obviously missed the mark and couldn't predict that he would draft 1c/1d back to back with a 5th oa/7th oa to considerably speed up the process of the rebuild. Let's be honest, no one else knew that would happen either. If Benning listened to the general consensus and drafted Cody Glass over Petey, it wouldnt really matter if the Canucks got flat capped, lu penalty, strapped to roussell/beagle contracts for another year because 15mil is still more than enough to spend on locking up hughes long term, and using the rest of cap to fill out the holes in roster. Only difference is that we as fans would still be wishing we had a true 1C while still hoping to win the lotto someday. I mean to this day, the Canucks still has nobody from the minors to outplay oldman beags, let alone a fucking 3C, it looks like the old man will be able to play out his entire contract and not be sent down to the minors/scratched like loui as long as he is healthy.
