This feels similar to when the Sens paid a 2nd for Derek Stepan last summer. Boggled my mind how we had to pay for a cap dump.. And now the same is happening with Keith.

I guess some GM are just not very good.

Also whenever an aging player wants to move close to home to finish his career, it means he’s going to mentally check out and just collect his paycheck and ride out the contract.

Flames still paying fucking Brouwer, etc

Nvm the no retention, but they also have to protect his 37 yr old ass for Seattle expansion

Jett black Benning now's your chance to try sign Larsson to play with Hughes :)

Larson is as good as signed , just gotta wait till after draft to anounce.

Holland is an old school guy.

I understand his thinking - his team is green and Keith is a guy who's done/seen it all so he thinks that experience is invaluable.

Problem is there's a thing called the cap and now he's paying a guy 5+ mil that is not just past his prime, but is actually bad.

Maybe he'll play well with new motivation & in a sheltered role, but they still lost the trade badly.

Hits close to home as our GM has been cutting his own legs off cap wise for 7 years in the name of veteran experience.

This feels like a Andrew Ferance repeat.
I’m not worried about the cap hit , this basicly eats Kleftboms LTIR. And we have some flexibility this year and next , there’s nothing on the UFA market this year but 2 year and then anchor contracts.

Holland obviously believes some sheltered minutes will give Keith a second wind. Im worried about the close to home time to mail it in aspect.

The difference is that the Canucks had only horvat & boeser as the future, and didn't know what the core was gonna look like to build around from. So he signed the vets to be place holders on the roster til the prospects developed and were ready to play in the NHL, and because the team is shit, the only way you can sign players through fa is more term and money VS other competitive teams.

Holland alrdy knows what the core is for the oilers, and simply just needs to use the cap to build around them, he even hard negotiated rnh.....although I think I can see where Holland is coming from, Keith is still better player than Jones, or at the very least still tougher to play against. Another 20+ toi min dmen to help share minutes with nurse, won't be surprised if he can pad his stats to 30-40pts playing with 2 100+ players, Keith being a giveaway machine won't matter as much to the oilers since if it's not him, it's someone else from his team that will giveaway anyway

Mental gymnastics. There's never a good time to give out bad contracts - only exception would be if it's like the one piece you need to put yourself over the top where the Cup(s) will justify it.
