Paging IT Support

Got given a gaming laptop and was told it was running hot after being dropped a short distance. The guy who gave it to me is money bags and replaced it rather than fixing the over heating issue. Ran it on Wednesday night and everything still worked fine but the CPU would be 75-82 degrees while running games. Last night I pulled the back off, loosened the fan screws and then put them back in. Made sure all the components were properly seated. Now the CPU is running 20-30 degrees cooler than previous (50-60 deg)... I assumed I would have to replace the thermal paste on the heat sink, is it possible loose screws were the issue? Nervous that I'm not seeing the same problem I was previous.

This is why reseating components is usually step 1 to trouble shooting

Chances are if it was dropped the contact between cooler and cpu lid were not good, I highly suggest popping the cooler off and using some fresh thermal paste though as it does degrade over time

I'll pick up some paste after work.

Nothing more to it than using a plastic scraper to clean and then isopropyl alcohol to wipe down once the big chunks are gone?

Yea, you can do the alcohol wipe if you want but as long as you wipe the lid off well it will be fine

Then squirt a blob of paste in the middle of the lid and place the cooler on as evenly as possible, use X pattern to tighten down the cooler to make sure the paste squishes out evenly and blammo

Id also add to make sure you dont get thermal paste anywhere else on the motherboard and if you do, wipe it up with the alcohol wipe and make sure it dries all the way before putting it all back together. Also make sure just to use a relatively small blob. A little bigger than say a pea.

Good promotion going on for the athletic, 66% off. It works out to be around 26bucks for the year, definitely worth purchasing if you're into sports articles without click bait titles and high quality journalism!
