The franchise has bled talent for a while well before Torts. Couldn't keep Rick Nash, Jeff Carter wanted out the moment he landed, Johansen didn't want to extend, etc.

Columbus isn't a particularly exciting city, it's kinda out of the way, the franchise has no winning tradition, attendance isn't very good despite not competing with any of the other big major leagues... I think the latter point hurts a lot because fundamentally Columbus is all about college sports. To a lot of players it must feel like playing in a very bland setting where winning with the Jackets specifically doesn't mean as much as with other teams.
