Haha I had a good laugh reading this earlier today.

Can't recall what kind of money he left on the table, just know it was a hell of a lot more.

Duclair reportedly wanted 5x5 and was offered 3x3.25 by Ottawa. Declined that and now he’s getting what he woulda paid in taxes jaja

it is only 1 year though if he does have a good season he can still get paid
the 3x3.5 he would only make 10.5?m and be locked in for 3 years next a season he might sign a 4x5 or something
vaccines lkely be out things more normal post covid and teams caps opened up a bit more

plus hes not on the senator for 3 years thats gotta be a win

teams are gonna be crunched for cap for the next few years. and there's no way gate revenues in 2021-2022 will come close to 2019. there's going to be a bad recession and people will be skeptical of attending crowded events for a while.

It's really risky though, he has been on 6 teams since 2014.
Apparently he's got some issues off ice, being hard to coach etc.
Anyone in the NHL can get paid if they have a good season. For example, Duclair could've locked up 10m in 3years after having a good season with the Sens. Especially on a team that is pressure free, fans don't expect them to win the cup rn. He enjoyed his time there too. After his 3 yrs, he will be 28 and perhaps Ottawa may be competing by then, and covid would be history and everything else back to "normal" for him to bank a 5x5 contract which puts him 35mil by age 33 if all works well.

Instead, he has to prove he's consistent, perform well under a new system, new team, and hope he plays good enough to off set at least the 6m loss in the next 2 years. Basically he gotta play well enough to convince Florida or another team to sign him 5x5 next season. By the time that's done, hes 31yrs old with shy of 27mil and I don't think he can manage another contract that will earn him more than 8mil in the 2yrs when hes 33, and might demand more as it will be his last cha Ching contract imo.

whos to gurantee he has a good season on the sens? usually a good season for a top scoring forward on a shitter team is like 40 pts 50 if your lucky unless your kovalchuk in his prime
so what if he left money on the table to not play for the sens can you blame him ? they have a shit owner and are a basement team year after year and get rid of anybody that wants to get paid to keep low salary
play for the sens 3 years and maybe they will be contending? LOLOLOL BRO WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING

and if it wasnt covid duclair likely gets a bigger contract pretty much everybody that signed this year took less $$ and either way its a million dollars its not like dude cant live off that
hes going to the panthers probably looking to replace hoffmans role and if he can put up 30-30 or close to it with better linemates i dont sese why he wouldnt get paid
and if vaccines are out and fans can go to games and new tv deal ect ect i dont see why the nhl wouldnt be fairly back to normal next season and he can get a raise

Of course there is no guarantee, but the odds of him staying put in Ottawa where he was happy with his role, team, coach, & found success to revive his NHL career is more favourable than risking it to go to another team under Quenneville where he wasn't too happy with his deployment during his brief stint w/ the chicago bhawks. Also before his time with the Sens it looked like he was going to be a fringe nhler going overseas. Yet, you think he can suddenly become a 60pt player on a better team to replace hoffman..? I doubt that, but I guess anything can happen.

He also didn't leave Sens cuz he didn't like the team, he left because of money. He thought he's worth 5x5. He probably also thought he could at least get better than 3x3.25m deal, but clearly that wasn't the case as he settled for 1yr/1.7m due to most teams being fucked by the flat cap.
I agree Sens have a shitty cheap owner, but they weren't a basement team when they had ek, stone, Hoffman etc. They became a basement team after blowing the team up to rebuild, so Im saying their team full of good prospects will be 3+yrs developed and be a better team than today. And assuming Duclair stays consistent, he would've established himself on the team as a vet, or at least proved to the league he's a consistent 40+pt player for a 5x5 contract. He's risking it for next season, and let's say he delivers, he will be 31 by end of his 5x5 contract. He still won't make more than 35mil by age of 33 going this risky route.
