He's not being blamed for supporting the idea of peaceful protest. He was speaking out against cops saying he and his wife had to have discussions with their sons to make sure he knew how to act when police were around so that he's safe. So he's supporting what the protesters are saying, that cops are dangerous to the people they protect. He even dismissed that some police officers were attacked during one of those protests.

Just poor wording and lack of context from the writer.

I'd still say a good portion of us are atheist. There's probably a good sized group of Christian/Catholic

Do you have to believe in god to be a Christian? Can you be a Christian for sharing many values/morals with Christians? And not practicing.

Then you would have lied when you accepted jesus into your life and accepted that he died for your sins.

Kinda hard to be Christian without believing in christ. Sharing morals (at least select morals) is just being a good person. Most modern churches I know of have expanded their interpretation of getting into heaven to include people who are genuinely good even if they aren't christian/catholic/etc.
