Which is it?
Benning signing emotionally attached players over term & price? Or letting them go elsewhere to get paid. As long as Benning doesn't go out there and sign more anchor contracts, I see it as a win.
I think Benning is srs about giving juolevi and chatfield a shot in the NHL, next season would be the perfect time to see what they got. Even though the Canucks desperately need a huge change in the backend, they don't have the cap to do it anyway this season. This shows me Benning is learning from his past mistakes, and he knows the window is when the anchor contracts are up (2 to 3yrs) he's trying to set up so there's no declining players locked up. Flames window is now, so it makes sense to go all in, think about it.. Markstrom and tanev locked up 10.5m avv for the next 4 years lololol
I guess we need to pray Rathbone and juolevi deliver hahaha
well, problem is that we *really* have no one else to make up the void in the blueline right now without a big trade involving the 2021 1st rounder or a big UFA signing. None of the up and comers project very well, we'd be lucky for two of Juolevi/Rafferty/Rathbone/Chatfield to even become regulars at some point in the future, let alone Top 4 D-men. and honestly it's a joke that some in the media are penciling in Chatfield, the guy showed some hope like three seasons ago and now he hasn't scored a goal or put together more than 10 points in the AHL the last two years. not even Melnyk would be OK with having this guy on the lineup.
The cap situation will be even worse next season so if Benning stays "disciplined" and lets the blueline rot it'll be two seasons down the drain and no solution thereafter, and he *always* tries to make bold UFA moves. And since the core just starting competing, would the players even be OK with essentially throwing the next two seasons to get through a management-induced cap crunch, as if the plan were to get lottery picks? Which is why the Barrie thing is probably happening.
/e sorry Secksii, prepare to be bitterly disappointed:

@PierreVLeBrun
The Canucks have had more talks with Tyson Barrie’s camp tonight. More to come tomorrow morning I think.
