Some are saying it was the right decision given the contract situation but I'd argue the opposite. We have no one in the system remotely close to being able to replace Tanev, even assuming Rafferty can be an NHL defenseman. The only way we can have a non-AHL Top 4 is either by giving up significant assets to trade or by signing an UFA.
FFS, this is what the blue line looks right now:
Hughes-Myers
Edler- Stecher
Benn/Juolevi- Rafferty
Even if we somehow retain Stecher we still have two AHL-caliber blueliners, a declining Edler and Myers who shouldn't be playing more than 20 minutes/night like ever. This would legitimately be the worst blueline in the league and we don't even know if Stecher is coming back.
Which is why I'm so sure Benning is going to give way too much money and term to Barrie, because it's the only way to field a non-terrible blueline without emptying the cupboards. It will still be bad, though, and our cap situation will be even more fucked than if we had simply retained Tanev.
Which is it?
Benning signing emotionally attached players over term & price? Or letting them go elsewhere to get paid. As long as Benning doesn't go out there and sign more anchor contracts, I see it as a win.
I think Benning is srs about giving juolevi and chatfield a shot in the NHL, next season would be the perfect time to see what they got. Even though the Canucks desperately need a huge change in the backend, they don't have the cap to do it anyway this season. This shows me Benning is learning from his past mistakes, and he knows the window is when the anchor contracts are up (2 to 3yrs) he's trying to set up so there's no declining players locked up. Flames window is now, so it makes sense to go all in, think about it.. Markstrom and tanev locked up 10.5m avv for the next 4 years lololol
I guess we need to pray Rathbone and juolevi deliver hahaha
