Canucks might head into next season with Myers in the top pairing and an AHL third pairing with no Markstrom to bail them out. Although I am absolutely confident Benning will give Barrie a mindfuckingly horrible contract.

yes, we will weep a lot.

Some are saying it was the right decision given the contract situation but I'd argue the opposite. We have no one in the system remotely close to being able to replace Tanev, even assuming Rafferty can be an NHL defenseman. The only way we can have a non-AHL Top 4 is either by giving up significant assets to trade or by signing an UFA.

FFS, this is what the blue line looks right now:

Hughes-Myers
Edler- Stecher
Benn/Juolevi- Rafferty

Even if we somehow retain Stecher we still have two AHL-caliber blueliners, a declining Edler and Myers who shouldn't be playing more than 20 minutes/night like ever. This would legitimately be the worst blueline in the league and we don't even know if Stecher is coming back.

Which is why I'm so sure Benning is going to give way too much money and term to Barrie, because it's the only way to field a non-terrible blueline without emptying the cupboards. It will still be bad, though, and our cap situation will be even more fucked than if we had simply retained Tanev.

Yep, sucks they're going to Calgary but I'm happy they're getting paid by them

Benning is doing a great job not signing them to overpriced long term, that would be anchors when they're expected to be in their competing window.

Which is it?

Benning signing emotionally attached players over term & price? Or letting them go elsewhere to get paid. As long as Benning doesn't go out there and sign more anchor contracts, I see it as a win.
I think Benning is srs about giving juolevi and chatfield a shot in the NHL, next season would be the perfect time to see what they got. Even though the Canucks desperately need a huge change in the backend, they don't have the cap to do it anyway this season. This shows me Benning is learning from his past mistakes, and he knows the window is when the anchor contracts are up (2 to 3yrs) he's trying to set up so there's no declining players locked up. Flames window is now, so it makes sense to go all in, think about it.. Markstrom and tanev locked up 10.5m avv for the next 4 years lololol

I guess we need to pray Rathbone and juolevi deliver hahaha

Tanev is not worth that much.

Calgary took two mainstays from us now.

Excellent asset management Jimbo.........

I mean both the Markstrom and Tanev contracts I would consider an overpayment but Benning is still a damn fool

Our D core is shit as it is. We are now down Tanev and most likely Stecher.

Holtby and Demko are going to have to play in front of an even worse defense.

As others have said my biggest fear is Benning takes a run at another FA D-man and will make the overpayment on the Tanev contract look like a bargain.

What you say is logical. That does not comfort me though. I still think Jimbo is going to sign someone on the back end to a crippling long term deal that will screw things up for years.

That offer sheet suggestion on Cernak is sounding pretty good right now but I don't know if Benning is going to be able to restrain himself from chasing a big fish.
