Ottawa Senators rugged defenceman Matt Carkner underwent surgery on Monday to repair a knee injury that has been lingering since last season.
According to Senators general manager Bryan Murray, Carkner is expected to be out of the lineup for at least a month.
Last season, the 30-year-old defenceman appeared in 50 games contributing seven points and accruing 136 minutes in penalties.
The Winchester, Ontario native is entering his third season in the Nation's Capital, he also appeared in one game with the San Jose Sharks during the 2005-06 season.
With Carkner out for at least the first month of action, defenceman David Rundblad is expected to make the Senators opening day roster.
Rundblad spent the last four seasons in the Swedish Elite League with Skelleftea.
Senators forward Peter Regin is also expected to skate on Tuesday and could be recovered enough from a shoulder injury to be ready on opening night.
