Seems a lot of folks from Edmonton do not like natives. Everyone I know with ties to Edmonton dislikes them in the very least. Some are outright racist towards them.

When I visited Edmonton a few years ago the first thing my friends told me was 'don't fuck with the natives'. Was told don't even look them in the eye.

Even when we visited friends of friends they warmed me to watch out for the natives after I introduced myself as being from Vancouver.

They seemed genuinely fearful of them. This was in the Stony Plain area close to highway 16. Many of them had personal stories to tell of how they were jumped, beaten robbed, bar fights and so forth with natrives in Edmonton.

I don't know how much this is true but I did witness them walking the streets in large groups and was told to never go outside at night unless you were with a large group.

My brother went there to visit shortly after I did and he told me a fucked up story in which him and a group of friends witnessed from a balcony a man robbed off everything and stripped to his underwear while being beaten to an inch of his life. The attack was committed by a group of aboriginal women.

I never experienced violence when I was there but I know my brother would not make this up, so I am not sure what to make of the situation. All I can say is there was a general fear from white people towards natives when I visited.

This is a stark contrast from B.C were my experiences with indigenous people has been nothing but positive. I do not know if these are just isolated incidents or if the native population in Edmonton is in fact geared towards violence in that area.

Thats wild as fuck. There are definitely some stories like that around area with large native american populations around the US. Especially on the reservations, they do not like outsiders at all, and can be violent towards them for seemingly no reason. Its an interesting dynamic that seems most prevalent in north american countries.

My cousin is a police officer, and was helping out in north dakota when he was attacked by a group of native americans, he went to the local police explained that he is a fellow police officer helping out in the community and they basically told him that they cant do anything about, the reservation police would handle all matters regarding the native americans, and when he talked to them they basically said too bad and wouldnt do anything about it because he's white and not a resident of the reservation. Absolutely wild if you asked me.

yesss. that's quite an accurate description of the average Edmontonian IMO.
the problem we have here is the proximity of Enoch and Hobema reservations and how close they are to Edmonton. In my field I do work with Native americans who went through a trade winds program that is for just aboriginal people, mostly the women that come from there seem to have their shit together but this is a rarity. Many Metis people seem to be level headed though and not at all like the pure bred savages.

in coastal BC specifically most of the reserves are pretty good on resources, but once you get to places like Prince George shit's rough too. in most of the country there's a huge gap between indigenous people raised in the rez vs in town.
