It was probably secksii , I wasn’t sure why the Leafs acquired clarkson and he explained that.
It looks to me like the leafs need to clear ~1mil still to be under. Basicly the difference between Hymans cap hit and a league minimum guy taking his spot.

Previously it was Deals were players received front loaded contracts over a long term knowing they would retire before the contract fulfilled. This artificially lowered the cap hit.


Now you have RFA contracts being abused. Holdouts. Back loading contracts to force higher qualifying offers down the road. Also Arbitration can be manipulated based on analytics.

Ben Hutton was not even tendered a qualifying offer because arbitration would bind the team into paying him more than he is worth.


I am missing some other abuses for sure. Imagine what lawyers can come up with to rig the system. Sadly it is an issue that can never be resolved fully.
