Crazy, i dont doubt he will eventually live up to that 7m/yr, but i dont think hes shown enough to have earned that much yet. Might just be me, i dont know lol

Agreed. And I think this hurts teams trying to sign those big RFA contracts right now

the nhl will have to step in and modify the rfa contract situations since its getting out of hand with all the players holding out

yeah im thinking there needs to be some changes made to the current rfa system
seems like there are too many good players abusing the system and just holding out

they need to bump up the deadline to sign and play or something or make arbitration available to more players or something so these situations get resolved within a certain time frame and dont drag out this long
i mean i dont blame them for wanting more $$ but you cant be a a 6-7m player request 10m and just hold out and not sign and fuck the team... thats fucked up that shouldnt be allowed to happen

or have like forced arbitration after a certain date unless both parties choose to part ways or something

they aren't "abusing" the system, they're leveraging it as designed. GMs and owners made up the offer sheet "taboo" so RFAs have no option but to either re-sign or demand a trade. the taboo is being broken down because a few GMs realized they have nothing to lose by trying, except for good boy points in the old boys' club. maybe if they didn't make offer sheets seem inherently toxic players would be a lot more reasonable in negotiations.

it leaves the nhl with a bad image considering how many star players are holding out at the moment before the training camp starts
if you are a fan of one of those teams and you see your star player holding out like this and pulling a move like nylander last year and being awful when he starts playing
it will end up like toronto fans on nylander
its the only league that this kind of stuff happens to this scale

I can't blame the players for trying to maximize the money they earn in what is a short career.

The top end guys push veterans and bottom tier guys to increasingly lower contracts because of these holdouts though.

When a few players are taking such a huge chunk of the cap there is not much left for the 'average players'. This is creating instability for the majority and threatens to undermine the cap system in the long haul.

Which is why another lockout is most likely on the horizon. Furthermore with different tax regulations in each province/state the playing field is hardly level.

There is such parity in the league teams can not afford to let players go to free agency though. That is why players are seen as being 'overpaid' during UFA or resigning with their current team as a RFA holdout when in reality market conditions dictate the salary they make.

The few who do make it to UFA status and are higher end players can demand contracts that will most likely jeopardize the teams they sign with in the long term. That is the price of UFA signings.

I think that is why RFA'S can hold out and demand such a payout. Everybody knows if they make it to UFA there will be a line of teams making ludicrous offers to land them even though they are aware it will most likely sink them down the road.

The window for winning is small when there is so much parity so teams are willing to take the all or nothing approach.

Imagine if the big name RFA'S holding out were UFA's. They would without question make a lot more. That is why you have to pay them so much as an RFA. You lock them down for term and hand out the money so you know they are yours.

i wonder what the players want now. The salaries have exploded in recent years, the % share is better than it used to be
maybe the escrow thing that they want to be reduced but they will shoot themself in the foot if they go in a lock out again.

They are about to get their most juicy tv contract (which will increase their salaries again)

I agree it is gives the league a bad image.

That being said I can not place blame on the players.

They need to take what they can get while they can. Everyone is one bad injury away from being a millionaire to making fuck all.
