That home town discount.

More like Vegas gave him a hometown discount. Guy is only coming back because he’s sort of a face of the franchise, otherwise I think he would have a hard time getting a contract maybe.

Gain a draft pick and unload a goalie that didn’t fit in their system from what I can see.

yup. ALso, Columbus will be a wild west for goalie competition and maybe they can get something out of Sparks, while of course Toronto has all the cash in the world to pay for dead-weight sitting in LTIR

Can you or someone explain the benefit to Toronto in all of this?

gain cap relief by putting clarkson on LTIR with horton when season starts on day 1.
Which means Marner isnt signing til season starts like day 2, but at least it looks like the leafs will be able to keep him. However, they gotta sign him asap after day 1, or the cap goes up the longer he waits, like if they cant til dec 1 it'll be $$$$$$$

Athletic

CapFriendly illustrates this pretty well with the current Leafs roster they have up. Without Clarkson’s $5.25 million cap hit, that group of 21 players listed would be $76.98 million – or roughly $4.5 million under the cap – entering the year.

If the Leafs put Nathan Horton’s $5.3 million contract on LTIR under those circumstances, that would free up only another $800,000. (They could theoretically recall a few more players and expand that figure by a million or two, but not use LTIR to its full potential.)

That LTIR-created space would not be enough to accommodate Marner’s deal, which could be north of $11 million a season.

And the Leafs would be leaving money on the table because of where they were in relation to the cap when Horton was placed on LTIR.

Now, the Leafs do have other options. Zach Hyman and Travis Dermott are currently injured and could easily begin the year on LTIR. That would free up additional room to accommodate Marner’s contract. They weren’t in a completely desperate situation without having Clarkson on the roster.

But the addition of another big cap hit that can be placed on LTIR whenever they want gives them more options, increasing Pridham’s flexibility in terms of how (and when) he shifts these pieces around.

There is zero danger at this point they will leave cap space on the table. And they can handle a very big offer sheet (or contract decision) on Marner at any point between now and Dec. 1.

So that’s why they wanted the contract.

I dont think they still can afford him yet. They need to make another move. According to capfriendly they are 2.1m over, after adding clarkson and horton to LTIR that frees up 10.6-ish. so right now they only have 8.5m to work with AFTER the day 1 of the season. If marner is going to be paid 11+ they need to free up a mininun of 2.5m more.

Leafs should just wait until one of the other RFAs sign, you know they're waiting for Marner

5.25m relief gives them a lot more flexibility, like what the athletic piece says, they can also start Hyman / dermott on IR as well. I get the feeling marner may just sign for 11mil or just short of it... Unless the extra 500k a year is a huge deal breaker to him at the cost of leaving toronto..

Starting another player on ir does give them some more felixibility... This is a fun situation the leafs are in, i still wanna see him get offer sheeted and snatched from toronto lol

How so? The structure doesn’t affect the AAV cap hit

I’m not following how adding clarkson is any benifit.

Leafs have 78.5 cap hit before trade leaving them 3mil in space(8.3 with Hortons LTIR).
Leafs have 83.7 with him after trade leaving them 2.2 mil over(8.3 once both are placed on LTIR)

Am I missing something?

/e They have 24 players on active roster so once both of them are dropped and Marner is added they actually have 9.7 cap space but that’s irrelevant to the trade.
