Damn 7 years for a guy with a career high of 30 points. The amount per year looks fair but that's a weird deal.

its a very weird deal to me.... its like hes not betting on himself to improve at all

so if he gets better its not great for him, if he stays the same, its pretty decent i guess? 7 years is just a long time imo

Seems like a great deal for him. The length alone is a win, why price yourself into being a negative value player. He’s 25 he’s not likely to morph into a 20g + threat and both sides know that.
Teams aren’t throwing truck loads of money at role playing UFAs that are pushing 30 so why ask for a shorter term deal that pays a bit better and risk having to sign several short term deals in a few years.

IMO the only wierd thing about it is how common sense it is for both sides.

Can you or someone explain the benefit to Toronto in all of this?

Gain a draft pick and unload a goalie that didn’t fit in their system from what I can see.

I think it is a wise thing to do.

Yes there is a potential to make more money but he just guaranteed himself 20 million.

With how much the game is changing combined with the fact players are peaking at an increasingly young age I think this 25 year old hit it out of the park.

Injuries can derail a career quickly. He will not have to worry about finances ever again even if his career ends early.

With the trends of elite players eating up so much cap space there is less money for the bottom forwards/dmen. I think him and/or his agent saw this and took the guaranteed money.
