I think there are too many majors these days which require calculus and related classes, when they should really only require basic algebra and statistics.
Well science is really the only department that requires it. They haven't yet made business or economics majors require it (at least not everywhere), and right now a few science degrees can avoid those classes by getting a BA instead of a BSC in certain classes. I know this because my cousin is a Psych major but in the Arts track because she hates math and would fail calculus if she had to take it.
Most jobs only require basic algebra and statistics, but there's valid reasons why calculus and advanced functions/vectors is required for most science courses. Even if you won't use it (which you really might if you go into academia or really technical jobs), it teaches skills that are necessary for those departments. Just like English and History from high school teach you skills you need to do well in Arts.
I don't know why I fucking know this considering I don't go to university.
