Matthew Tkachuk got branded.
You knew that if you dialed into radio rights holder 630 CHED and heard the immediately recognizable theme from Environment Canada Wildlife Services Hinterland, Who’s Who, which used to run 60-second public-service announcements exploring wildlife in Canada.
Only the focus of this one was a different kind of beast:
“The Flaming C Turtle makes his home in Calgary but can be spotted on frozen surfaces all over Canada and the United States. He can be recognized by the No. 19 on his shell,” the announcer began in professorial tones. “The Flaming C Turtle will often sneak up on prey. He’s known for quickly retreating into his shell after he attacks. While he can appear aggressive, the Flaming C Turtle is actually quite timid and wouldn’t likely survive for long in the wild. This generation of the animal is considered to be less noble than its predecessor.
“For a more complete story on the Flaming C Turtle, why not contact the Canadian Wildlife Service in Ottawa?”

Quote
Former NHL referee Paul Stewart, a one-time enforcer, said the Tkachuk hits “would have drawn an immediate response in the era when I reffed and even back in the Jurassic Era when I played in the WHA and the NHL.
“This isn’t Tkachuk’s first rodeo. He knew what he was doing, whom he was hitting and what the response was going to be. That’s the very reason why Claude Lemieux was so widely hated and disrespected around the game — actions like these followed by turtling to avoid accountability.”
Negative Tkachuk commentary was coming from as far away as Lugano, Switzerland, from where Scottie Upshall checked in, and from high profile retired NHL players such as Teemu Selanne.
Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre in Vancouver offered: “I’m struck by how disinterested any of the Flames, including standup captain Mark Giordino, were in rescuing Tkachuk.”
