its true lol
matthews is the most elite goal scorer in recent years to ever play in NHL since Ovechkin.
laine comes close, but not quite there yet.
Matthews is basically scoring 1 goal per every other game on average, in just 3 years of his NHL career. He's already scored 6 goals in 6 games this season.
Draistl scored 50 goals last year, but prior to those years he hasn't even scored anywhere close to that. He has 1.5 more seasons than Matthews, and in 356 NHL games, he scored 129 goals. Not exactly a definition of an elite goal scorer, good but not elite. Matthews played 218 games so far, but already scored 117 goals. Yeah you read that right, he scored more goals even if you half the games he played.
just the fact that matthews is only 12 goals behind Drais in goal total scored in NHL, with 138 less games should be enough to notice

Draisatl doubled his goal output from the season before.

Normally I would expect a considerable regression in a case like this. Draisatl is an exception though I think. I don't expect him to get 50 again but I think he is going to be 40+. He is elite and he will prove it this year with another strong season.

I agree that a guy putting up ~ 70 points and then exploding for 50 goals and 100 points for one year is not elite. However if he can put up similar numbers again he is in that category without question imo.

Draisatl's first 2 seasons were back and forth between NHL and AHL. This is his 4th year being an NHL regular. I would imagine he is going to be a point per game player or more for many years to come.

This year Matthews needs to prove he can stay healthy. If he can do that he has a chance at 50 with the way he plays combined with the other superstars surrounding him. That is the only major knock on him at this point.

Matthews is in position to be the next generations Ovechkin. He is certainly not as durable as the Russian machine though, so there is a risk his career could end early. For the benefit of the league I hope he is healthy from this point forward.

If your league counts positions then it’s really not that close. A wing and dual eligible position player vs two centers when all stats are pretty close.

we have different definition of elite goal scorers then lol
yes, draisatl can definitely improve and become an elite goal scorer in the future, if he continues to put up 40goals+ for rest of his career. However, as of now, he's no where in the category of being anywhere elite goal scoring machine lol.
i also mentioned he has about 1.5 season on matthews instead of full 3 seasons, because he went back and forth etc. Fact is, he played way more NHL games than Matthews, also with a generational talent in mcdavid and matthews is already leaps ahead of goals per game each player played.
Matthews has good players around him sure, but he mostly plays with nylander instead of marner. Last season, Matthews didnt even get the luxury to play much with Nylander because of the contract situation and being a bit behind in conditioning. Instead, he played with Kapanen/Johnsson in which both had their career years and matthews STILL scored goals at an insane rate lol. I know drais also split times away from mcdavid, but it's clear as day those two together are far more effective than each playing seperate lines, and drais cannot score as much goals playing with scrubs like reider, caggiula, chiasson, kassian level of playerz

He centered his own line for most of the 2017 playoffs and still produced over ppg. Small sample size I know but I still think he can produce with lesser players.

RNH is perfect for the role of 2nd line center so I don't think there is much sense for anyone else to do it, which is why you see them together more often now. Leafs top 6 is OP so the talent will be spread around more.

You are right that he is not there yet. I just think after this season once he proves the 50 goal year was not a fluke he will quickly move himself into elite territory.

Matthews is already there at a younger age so he obviously is far ahead of Draisatl in terms of goal scoring without question. I just think when this is looked back at in 5 years Draisatl will have closed much of the gap.

A guy putting up 50 goals followed by 40+ has to be considered elite imo.

Mathews a bigger scoring machine than drai?
Ok there.

Lol, im a oiler fan and I feel like I am being Objective when I say that Matthews is a bigger Goal scorer than Draisaitl. It's not hating, I have Draisaitl in my pool

McDavid and Matthews both potentially more prone to health issues whereas Kucherov/Draisaitl have been pretty sturdy. Im afraid my luck, I accept the trade and 2 days later McDavid goes out for the season or something ridiculous

Could very well happen, but I think Mcdavid's inuries were legit. Matthews might be a little more glassy though
