Cherry is a polarizing figure. To me that makes it entertaining.
Even though his lucidness has certainly gone downhill I enjoy his passion and respect his patriotism. Of course he uses that platform and goes way over the top. I feel for those who lost a loved one, but I don't think showing deceased law enforcement/military personnel goes with the mood of a hockey game.
I like how he showcases the less glamorous aspects of the game and appreciates them. You can tell he loves the game, he is just out of touch with todays game. Watching clips of a guy working hard, blocking shots, hitting, fighting, winning faceoffs etc is a nice change from the usual highlight reel.
What I hate about him is his constant interruptions, stubborn refusal to correct names he mispronounces and his random tangents he goes on that end up making no sense even though he uses up all the air time trying to explain them.
What I hate about him most though is it is clear he favors north American players. He seems to be stuck in some cold war nonsense still. If you watch older clips of him it is clear he hates the Russians and finds Europeans soft. He brings forth his opinions as fact. That pisses me off and it is extremely pompous and ignorant.
All in all I would say I love some things about him and despise him for his mannerisms as well.
The question is.... how can he be replaced? He has been the face of the show for years. It is difficult to find a replacement. They tried to put in Wikipedia George who clearly had limited hockey knowledge and the public was not receptive because it was obvious.
He will be replaced soon, I just hope the replacement is genuine. Don Cherry may be full of shit most of the time but I can still put up with him because he is a straight shooter.
