What exactly do you mean by trash? Because tbh, it's not an uncommon thing for sheetrockers to do that. Ask anybody who has demoed a fair number of rooms and I'm sure they'll tell you they've found stuff in the walls. Personally I've seen countless sodas/beers/etc sitting in the framing. Crumbled up napkins/paper bags/tin foil. Hell, I once even found a box of nails in a bathroom wall. It takes some talent to be able to put a wall up using nails, leave your nails behind the board, and not realize it.

Without seeing the context of it, kind of hard for me to judge. Just pointing out that it's a common thing, and contractors are far from upstanding citizens. Especially considering this was in a hospital where you likely got the lowest bidder of the lowest bidder (GC -> sheetrockers).
