At least you know who did it. You can sue that truck driver.
I had a construction worker throw a rock over an overpass while I was driving with the Panamera back in May. Called the city and they said "subcontractors, can't do anything about it" and my insurance company said no. Was told by my lawyer "litigation was a waste of time." The cost of getting that windshield replaced (among other things that break when those windshields need replaced, like the wiper function and radio reception) was one of the reasons I got rid of the car.
So far the company has been very collegial on the phone, so I'm hoping they're just gonna pay for the repairs out of their "shit happens" fund and I won't have to make a civil suit out of it. I have an off-duty police officer as a witness so I'm really lucky and I'm pretty sure there'll be really low resistance to cutting me a check.
I think it'll only be like $300 to repair the windshield. There's a dent that is minor enough to be taken out by home remedies but I'll have a shop do it if they're gonna pay for it, obviously.
The driver is well known with the regular workers here so it seems like an absolute fluke that it happened, because he's apparently been doing this same route going under the same signs for years. Maybe his tires were overinflated so he bounced abnormally high over the speed bump, or the wires holding the sign got old and started to sag or something. Seemed like a nice guy, he didn't realize he'd hit the barrier or that it had fallen. Far as I'm concerned it's between me and the company that owns the truck, since they've got insurance for these kinds of things.
Biggest issues are that my car needs an oil change and it's currently not street legal, and I was planning on going to home depot today which isn't accessible by public transport
