Let's be honest here. No one gives a shit about your nudes, or mine, or (I don't know what she looks like, she could be a model but to fit the point) Atheneh's. Not because we aren't all sexy mofos, but because we aren't famous. This was a targeted and malicious theft of property, an invasion of privacy, and just because it's a reality that people do this stuff it doesn't make them any less of scum or any less criminal.
I have a reasonable expectation that if I've encrypted a drive and it has a 15 character password with letters, numbers, case sensitivity, symbols, and some foreign characters, it's a clear sign that it's my property and no one should have it without my permission.
It's the cyber bullying argument. People view "hacking" in a different vein from theft because it's anonymous, so they're more willing to do it with less guilt. It's a crime.
Thank you for wording that in a way some of these guys might listen to or understand (not saying everyone, but those of you who don't seem to understand how this shit should be just as illegal as stalking and the crimes that go with it.)
dragoneth, your argument is exactly the same as "women shouldn't wear sexy clothes if they want to protect themselves from rapists." Yes that is an extreme analogy, but the fact is just because it is difficult to track down the criminals doesn't mean people should have to change their entire lifestyles. Society as a whole should be working towards a solution that allows for MORE freedom, not less freedom. Obviously it makes sense to take precautions in protecting your stuff but you make the victims sound more like criminals and that's unfair.
