they treated Makar briefly not touching the stick the same way they would've if he just drilled it into the zone instead. of course if you just dump the puck in you're giving up possession and so once the offside player tags up it's ok. hell, if he held up his stick way off the ice while Nichushkin tagged up it would've still been a good call. but Makar never ever loses possession of the puck, he's objectively carrying it in. the NHL effectively changed the criteria of the delayed offside rule, and even the meaning of possession itself.
offside rule amendment from like 2013 doesn't mention possession at all. it's only contact with the puck. it's literally defined as "contact with the puck" in the rule book. idk why everyone keeps bringing up possession when it's not in the rulebook at all. there's multiple instances of them calling this goal the exact same way since 2017.
Possession is mentioned only for skating in backwards with the puck.
