For you, by pure opinion rather than factual background, if there's even a question of "research to find out what to [do].... to do as little harm to your body as possible" just don't fucking do it. You want to lose weight and be healthy, not start a bodybuilding career. Even then there are non-harmful ways to pursue a bodybuilding career.
If it sounds like a shortcut, it's probably not a good idea. Again, all opinion.
Do what works for you but don't fuck your body up in the process. It sounds like you're gonna get wherever you want to be, if you're this committed. Don't screw up the afterward.
