control doesn't actually matter, contact with the puck does. you can technically have "control" from gently tapping the puck in before the blueline without making contact in the offensive zone, as the puck is going exactly where you intended it to. Makar had control but he didn't have possession.

if you actually watch the overhead camera angle they showed, instead of a forced perspective angle like this, you can see a decent gap between his blade and the puck the entire time nuke is off-sides
