Betting this time of the year is extremely difficult. You cant predict the effort level of teams guaranteed a spot that are playing against teams fighting for a bottom seed, or even those who are out of the playoffs.
Even a bottom feeder has a chance to beat a top tier team this time of year. I stay away from it down the stretch.
I think I'm just gullible to all the hype and the money lines throw me off when it comes to hockey. For example, the main reason I bet on the Capitals last night at Buffalo besides the inviting -160 line. I had read an article earlier in the day from the Washington Post that discussed how stacked and loaded the Capitals were talent wise. Discussing their new acquisitions and how much depth they had. They made mention of how well their third and fourth lines were playing. So I figured they'd at least show up hungry to win that game. Fighting for a top seed I also read somewhere in that article.
Even the betting sites I looked at all predicted a 5-3 Capitals win at Buffalo against a disappointing Sabres team as they put it. I was shocked when the Capitals were trailing 2-0 going into the 3rd period. When they scored two goals to tie it 2-2 in the third it was more in line with the pace of the game I wanted to see. They couldn't generate much shots on goal during the first two periods. I think it was 17-17 SOG for both teams going into the final period.
If I do bet on hockey again I'll just bet with my heart and not my mind. For example. I love to watch the Arizona Coyotes play. In my opinion they're so young and talented, but let's face it the Coyotes are a disappointing team record wise. The 'Yotes have more losing streaks than winning ones. But anyway the Coyotes were hosting a hot Tampa Bay Lightning team back on February 22. That's the game my heart wanted to bet on, and I should've taken the amazing money line. Coyotes were something like +160 at home. I don't remember how tempting the closing line was. But I was like, "I better not, the Bolts are the best team in the game right now." And sure enough the Coyotes won that game 7-3! And the game I had bet on that same day was the Capitals -200 at New Jersey against a weak Devils team. And the Devils won 3-2. The money line made me think it was a lock.
It's like I can't catch a break. That's how you lose 11 NHL bets in a row. My type of OCD thinking and foolish logic. On the plus side I nearly bet on the Coyotes at Winnipeg last night instead of the Capitals at Sabres. Looks like the Coyotes lost 4-2 so I can take some comfort in knowing I'd have lost on that game as well. This time it didn't backfire when I bet on the Capitals instead of the Coyotes.
I'm going to absolutely love the NHL one day when Houston, Texas lands a franchise. I sure hope it's the Arizona Coyotes!
