LAST YEAR #2“Joe Sakic was phenomenal in holding true to his vision over the past five seasons. With Chris MacFarland now taking over the reins, I have complete confidence that the future continues to look bright for the Avs. Keeping continuity with a Cup-winning team just feels right.”
“Hard to find fault when you’re sitting on a Cup. But watching the Avs put together this team over the past five years? It’s been a special run with the excitement increasing every year, and that’s indicative of great decisions by the front office.”
“Hey, they won the Cup. I’m very confident with the front office, though drafting and development of players outside of a high-end first-rounder has been an issue for a while now.”
It’s a tradition like no other: The best front office is the one that just won the Stanley Cup. Pretty simple, right?
In a results-based industry, it’s natural to do that and it’s why the GM of the year award being given out after the second round remains one of the NHL’s funniest things. “Oh, all three finalists made it to the conference finals? What a wild coincidence.”
But that reading of the situation simply does not do the Avalanche front office justice. Colorado’s Stanley Cup victory is the definition of “trust the process,” a culmination of five years of perfect planning and execution. No team has a higher hit rate on trades and signings in that time span. If you find yourself disagreeing with what Colorado did — just admit you’re wrong, and take the L. In Sakic we trust. The public gave Colorado A-pluses across the board, ranking the team first in every category except drafting and developing.
Funny enough, even the league’s best front office gets its own fair share of critique from its own fan base and that starts with many (!) questioning the team’s ability to draft. Sure, they hit on the big ones, but it’s been a worrying trend beyond that.
That happens to every elite team though as it’s hard to hit on picks outside the top 10. In any sense, it just feels like nitpicking given the roster this team has been able to construct.
Colorado is the class of the league right now, the model franchise. This, is how you build a sustainable Cup contender.
