I don't think him going to the NHL is the primary issue.

He is seen as someone attempting to avoid compulsory military service by fleeing the country. publicly signing a pro contract put him in the spotlight.

Russian athletes can have their conscriptions deferred if they stay in the country. Back in the day this is how star Russian players were classified as amateurs despite being elite players. They were technically enrolled in the military but hockey was always the first role for them.

He likely wanted to leave Russia without ever intending to serve in the military so they are punishing him for that and trying to make an example out of him.

Really messed up...

Always going to get more in the open market.

If it's money he wants another team will offer more than Calgary could.

That is the way it goes. UFA is almost always an overpay and it is very rare for a high caliber player to hit the open market so you get a lot of interest. The only advantage the team attempting to retain has is the ability to offer one extra maximum year to the contract.

Fedotov's mobile phone was confiscated at facility he was held at, according to a journalist on Sport-Express.

My understanding of the Fedotov situation is that he had verbally agreed to extend his CSKA contract, but the decided to go to the NHL instead. Because Russian players rely on being on a deferred/exempt list with their teams to avoid conscription, CSKA decided to take him off their list so the Russian army swooped in to claim him and now he either tolls away in the Arctic to then return to CSKA or risks getting sent to the Ukrainian meatgrinder.

Really fucked up.

Damn, its one thing to pull a kovalchuk over here, but to play the reverse card on russia takes some serious balls. Never thought i'd see that happen tbh.
