In that case it depends, if you want more attacks per second then the 1.28 would be better, people would want that for +life per attack modifiers.

In the case of the 1.1 you would get a higher damage with slower attack speed, better for critical hit builds.

In order to get that same dps without the ias you would need this for base damage...

You're not understanding.

In order for a slower bow to have the same dps it needs a higher damage range. When you crit with a higher damage range you are doing more damage per hit + crit increases that damage further.

The trade off is that you hit less often.


Bow with 1528 dps @ 1.28 attacks per second does only 926-1469 damage per hit. When that crits, say for 2x damage its 1852-2938.
I say this bow is better for +life per attack mods because for every 100 seconds you attack you get 128 attacks. (1.28aps x 100s) Thus if you have gear that gives you life when you hit, you are hitting more and would get more life than a bow that hits only 110 attacks in the same time.

Bow with 1529 dps @1.1 attacks per second does 1080-1700 (example) damage per hit. When that crits for 2x damage its 2160-3400 damage, hence why the slower bow is better for crit builds.

dps is a virtual number it's not the actual damage of the weapon, it's what the game calculates as the probable damage you'll do every second.

A rough way to determine the dps is like this: Weapon damage is 926-1469 aps is 1.28. So you find the mean damage of the weapon; (1469+926)/2 = 1197.5 x 1.28 = 1532, which would be the dps.

The reason it's different by a couple number is because the displayed aps is rounded. 1.1 +16% ias is actually 1.276, when you do the math properly you get (1469+926)/2 (1.276) =1528.

Long story short, when people get picky building their characters they may opt to get a slower weapon with the same dps because each hit will do more damage. If your ability is limited in how often it attacks then attack speed may not likely play any role at all and so going for a slower weapon would actually end up doing more damage than what is displayed.
