Friedman: Miller extension unlikely with Canucks; timeline doesn't fit, and trade offers are going to be too good to pass up

Friedman with a radio hit on the Don and Dhaliwal show:

Extension looking unlikely with the Canucks and Miller as Canucks doesn't see Miller's age fitting their core competitive window.

Trade offers have started and this is playing a role in the Canucks decision as Friedman believes there will be a bidding war and some of the offers they have or will receive will just be too good to pass up.

Friedman speculates that win now teams will be interested as well as teams who feel they have a young core and need 1 more big veteran piece to add to be competitive.

Miller is willing to re-sign in Vancouver, but not for a hometeam discount as likely this is his last and only big pay day. Term can be anywhere from 5-7 years.

Extension with Miller cant be signed until July 13th (after the draft) so likely any 1st round trade offers for Miller will be for 2023. Canucks like this idea anyway as the 2023 NHL draft is considered way stronger than 2022. -Teams have inquired if Canucks are willing to do salary retention; the answer is yes which would make Miller at 2.6AAV, but Friedman says that will just cost the trading team even more assets.

Friedman adds that this is a rare occasion and it doesn't happen very often that a top line Centre coming off almost 100 points gets traded the following season with term left on contract.

fuck yes

His value is at the highest it will ever be. He's entering his 30's and will get a big pay raise.

It's tempting but scary at the same time. JT is great

I think team like minnesota might make a serious offer, they need to let go of Fiala because of Suter/Parise buyouts.
The only way they're gonna replace his 80+pts ppg is with Miller, and at low cost of 2.6m if Canucks retain 50%.
That will allow Guerin to go for another run before the tank

maybe even the avs if kadri doesn't take a GFG hometown discount to go for another run at the cup

Rumor is trotz to VGK.

Bruce and trotz in same conference omg.. Defense usually beats offense.

Bruce also lost his man walker, and he has to try and adjust his coaching to focus more on analytics and structure despite going 0.600+ lol

Winnipeg has a couple edges in the Trotz race:

1) He's never coached in Canada
2) He's from there
3) Little chance he's blindsided like he just was by Lou compared to teams like PHI or VGK who you know are trigger happy

But that probably still won't be enough to lure him away from Vegas who can compete now and gives him an easy transition into retirement living (assuming this'll be his last stop). Winnipeg and Philly are both in limbo right now in terms of their roster.

philly isnt nearly in "limbo" as you think if we have a healthy roster and a coach who doesnt suck we should be fighting for a wild card at least and we should be healthy

and its likely we get rid of jvr the buyouts only 2 years at 2.6 freeing up like 5M or we can probably retain salary and ship him out and only deal with it for 1 season
i expect the flyers to have about 10m cap space this offseason and fletch already said he expects sandstrom/fedotov to fight for the #2 so were not spending money on a vet backup either
could also see a guy like lindblom at 3M getting traded that was a deal signed by hextall and he hasnt been quite as good post cancer treatment so i can see fletch shopping him

dave scott also said in the post season interview fletcher has a blank check so if trotz is the guy money might be the decision maker

denial of what?idk many teams that can have that many of their top players out for that long of time and be good
this season was literally the ahl squad due to injuries at times we had more call ups then actual roster players
