Anyone know if it's more advantageous to pay for you new smartphone outright versus paying it off monthly ?

100% better to buy it outright as compared to monthly.

You’ll save on average 30-40$ per month. And have the freedom to jump ship anytime you want to a new provider for a better deal.

Calculate the cost of the phone you want and divide that by the amount of months you think you will keep your phone then add the amount of a bring your own device plan you want

vs.

A package plan with the phone you want included in the contract

---

So 600$ phone you think you will keep 3 years and a 35$ dollar plan = 16.50$/m + 35$ = 51.5$ per month on average over 3 years

vs

600$ from "free" but pay 60$ per month on a 2 year contract then 1 year with a phone paid off 35$ BYOD plan = 51.66$ per month average over 3 years

just random numbers but I'm bored

Depends on the plan/carrier.
Koodo right now offers 50% off on pixel 2 on large tab on top of ur plan. And more phone deals like S8 etc.

U pay 0 upfront, and pay 21$/mo for 24 months. Which is 504 dollars. If you bought a pixel 2 outright elsewhere, it's 1000. So u just saved Urself 500 bux. U can also pay off the tab whenever you want, so u don't have to wait 24months either. This method just allows ppl who don't have 500 on the spot and is more convienient to pay it off over 2 yr span.

However if Ur with shit carrier like Rogers, and they make u sign a contract and pay off the phone monthly on top of ur plan, buying outright is the way to go. Since Ur basically paying Rogers interest for choosing to pay a phone overtime.

I'm currently with Bell and have a S6 that I got for 0$ about two years ago. I pay 60/month taxes not included for 4 gb of data.

I'm wondering what would be my monthly payment had I payed the phone outright when I bought it. Anyone know approximately ?

Some quick mafs for you guys :

Paid my phone 0$ and paid 60/month for two years = 1440$

Let's say I would have paid my phone 1000$, it would have to be under 440/24 = 18.33/month for it to be advantageous ? Or is there something I'm missing ? Under 20/month for 4 gb of data seems extremely cheap..
