I never said I was ok with the trade. Just pointed out the only reason i could see the deal happen
That and Umberger discipline
I think I missunderstood Smider comments, i read some comments about them but not the whole interview
Now that I've watched it I'm 90% fine with what he said
His message was that even with the plan of drafting and growing talent, it doesnt mean we should accept not getting into the playoffs because he feels we have a strong core (i do too: giroux, voracek, simmonds, couts, mason) and only a few moves (coaching changes, FA, trades) from being right into it and that there should be nothing wrong to do it
For me I feel we are currently a playoff wildcard team and with a better team system and better PK we would be in this year. Once we're in alot can happen, I wouldnt be impressed of a matchup vs caps or pens either. Not saying we got a contender group but we can still enjoy playoffs as a fan instead of accepting bad seasons line this because of a "plan"
The way I see it is we're not that far from a great situation where (like the blues) we could have a solid NHL team filled with great young players and then having a great prospect pool too
Having great prospect depth and taling time to develop shouldnt mean just letting your current NHL team get destroyed (like BUF, EDM, TOR, etc)
i figure 2-3 years tops before flyers are a steady playoff team again
we have 4 promising looking d prospects developing and prob add more this draft which sets up the back end for a while hopefully we can develop atleast 1 elite top 2 guy sorta deal
we already have a solid mid aged core forward group and not much depth in the pool but the guys we do have seem to be moving in the right direction and might turn into good bottom 6 guys or something + we prob add more this draft
goaltending..masons good but if he gets hurt a lot like this season were going to need a better back up that we can rely on a bit more while stolarz develops in the ahl for the next few years
and next season gudas should be healthy he sound like a half decent d man to have for pretty cheap which were going to need with coburn and timo gone
next season is looking like streit gudas delzotto schultz grossman macdonald schenn ... still gotta move some guys and make space for morin possibly ghost or just tough it out and develop them a year in the ahl
