Dej is right. Datsyuk would have been undrafted if not for the luck of the scout in literally being the only person to have seen Datsyuk. If other scouts had seen him as well I'm sure he would have gone higher. Wings waited to the 6th round because Datsyuk wasn't in high demand. He's also right that a big part of it was the lack of scouting Europe and Russia, but that was more a factor of travel than anything. It doesn't play as big a role now that most teams have scouts living there full time.
I disagree about hasek as an example though. A lot of goalies in the nhl today were drafted low, not because people didn't scout them but because goalies are always high risk high reward unless you get someone like lundgod.
hasek was a dominant goaltender in the czech league that was a high league back then
if it wasnt for the russian factor he would have been taken a lot higher. the whole trading around stuff was more that hawks believed in waite (8th OA) was the man of the future there, to play behind belfour.
