It was close from happening,

If I remember correctly, it was a cap dump player Sutter or Eriksson, gaudette or virtanen and the 1st pick this year for the offer. However Arizona wanted Demko as well, but Benning didn't budge, and Arizona was playing hard ball, hoping Benning would give in and call at the last minute of OEL's deadline.

Now they're just talking to themselves as if the Canucks made the offer first with Schmidt involved, when really Benning is probaby busy trying to lock up Petey before kraken uses their 80mil cap power to offer sheet Petey and force the Canucks to sign him for more than what they want.

I complain about the Canucks management/ownership quite a bit.

if they do get him they gotta have a big season prove they can win and maybe he will extend but that will be a big risk for the cost there is likely better options if thats the case

Usually when a team starts losing players due to the cap it is because they have been consistently successful which of course increases player bargaining power.

I don't want to just pick on the Leafs. The Canucks have lost players due to boat anchor contracts and poor cap management as well.
