maybe dej is right about Datysuk, but I still give the credit to PD over scouting

Quote
Datsyuk was first noticed by Red Wings Director of European Scouting Håkan Andersson in the summer of 1997–98.[4] Andersson was in Moscow to scout Dmitri Kalinin, but the one who caught his eye was Datsyuk, "this little guy on the other team." Andersson made another trip to see Datsyuk and would have gone a third time; however, his flight was canceled because of a storm.[4] A scout from the St. Louis Blues was on the plane as well, and as a result of that storm Andersson believes he is the only NHL scout to have seen Datsyuk play prior to the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, when the Red Wings drafted him 171st overall.[4]

When Datsyuk began his NHL career for the Red Wings, his mentors – including Soviet stars Igor Larionov and Sergei Fedorov, as well as Detroit captain Steve Yzerman – helped him learn his way around the NHL. He was put on a line with Brett Hull and Boyd Devereaux and had a moderately productive first year. The length and difficulty of the NHL season got to him eventually, causing him to sit out a clump of games at the end of the year in preparation for the playoffs. He contributed three goals and three assists to the Red Wings' 2002 Stanley Cup run.

Indeed. If wings win, the game 7 will have made it an even better series. If they lose, it will make it the most frustrating loss in recent history.

Disappointed we lost but since its memorials day and a chill evening with nothing going on yet this summer, I'll celebrate this moment for hopefully an epic game series.

May the best team this post-season between these two win, and even though we won't be in your division anymore, I hope to see you guys in the finals... Too continue on the original 6 rivalry legacy.. ;)

Cheers fellow Detroit fans; and Blackhawk rivals!

it doesn't matter

Players don't go 100+ if the scouts/team thought they'd turn out like Datysuk

very few teams were scouting europe back then. It wasn't amazing scouting by Detroit, when they took Datsyuk their scout was the only one who had seen him play.

Dej is right. Datsyuk would have been undrafted if not for the luck of the scout in literally being the only person to have seen Datsyuk. If other scouts had seen him as well I'm sure he would have gone higher. Wings waited to the 6th round because Datsyuk wasn't in high demand. He's also right that a big part of it was the lack of scouting Europe and Russia, but that was more a factor of travel than anything. It doesn't play as big a role now that most teams have scouts living there full time.

I disagree about hasek as an example though. A lot of goalies in the nhl today were drafted low, not because people didn't scout them but because goalies are always high risk high reward unless you get someone like lundgod.
