This is my rationalization attempt:

He's never intended to sign Pearson, he will try to trade him if he can.

But he doesn't want to give the team the message that they are giving up on the season, and they are claiming publicly that they want to sign him as "leverage" in the trade negotiations.

I'd be happy with a 4th round pick.

Apparently him being injured also helps as a trade chip, cuz of flat cap.

I imagine so; a team can just keep him on IR til the playoffs.

But given his poor year, I don't know how high the value is. Same goes for out other couple UFAs.

Holtby getting bought out for 500k in 21/22 and 1.9m 22/23 is the logical solution.
