Those kind of contracts become rather difficult to calculate because there is more than cap space involved in keeping a player of that prestige.
He has made ~ 125 million + in his career but you have to think how much money he has generated for Washington's ownership and the league.
Money well spent. Even the trickle down benefits of keeping him in Washington is to be taken into consideration.
Even if he is not a bargain on a cap level he is still the one selling the tickets and merchandise. When a player reaches that level of notoriety his worth expands beyond the team itself.
That is why he can command that kind of salary even if it is not worth the cap hit in such a competitive league.
I am still pissed he got robbed of a 50 goal season. Want to see him break the record for most 50+ goal seasons.
