If im leaving my home city to play for a team without a future & selling more future to be part of the team like CBJ, i'd want a max 8year contract too lol.

Only the team with current control of rights can offer 8 years, any new teams can only offer 7 years

so they would have had to aquire his rights from the leafs first, and then they could have offered 8, i think.
