Tavares is phenomenal. No question he makes those around him better.

He turned Matt Moulson into a 30+ goal scorer.

His career quickly fizzled after leaving.


Where I disagree is his need to rely on a goal scorer. I think he is more than good enough to be a 40+ goal scorer if the shoe was on the other foot.

He is versatile enough to play the role of playmaker and finisher. Being the playmaker is more suitable when you have elite finishers like Tavares and Matthews.

If the leafs had two players of that caliber who were pass first guys Marner would manage 40 goals a year imo.

The center is usually the one who drives the play and sets up the offense. In Marners case I think he is doing all of that from the Wing, at least more than other wingers.

Based on all of that I feel he is due for the big payout.

Personally I think Marner is superior to Matthews.


to be fair, matthews also drives the play.. only difference is that he scores the goal himself so he doesn't get high assists since it goes to his goal output instead. I also don't think it's a coincidence both kapanen and johnsson had their career breakouts playing with him.

Marner and Tavares both benefit from playing with each other, but yeah i'd say marner benefits more playing with tavares than the other way.

I definitely don't think it was a coincidence Marner jumped up 25 pts playing with tavares.

Not at all. Tavares is a top 5 center in the league imo. To say Marner is driving that line just seems absurd to me.

Yes Marner is a top end winger, but realistically he was clearly benefiting by playing with JT. This is great though, Dubas is a pushover and can’t negotiate for shit. After this season their defence will be kinda dogshit so this is it for them. Screw the Leafs

JT beat his career best goal total by 9 , 38 to 47 and set a career high in points. Both players obviously benifit from each other. Marners ice time went up 16 to 20 minutes also. Put Marner back on the 3rd and give him 3rd line minutes ofc he’s not gonna score 90 points. it only takes watching him for a few shifts to see Marner is dynamic and is every bit as good as JT or Mathews.
If I had to pick today one of those 3 to start building a team it’s Marner hands down, could be JT if he wasn’t turning 29 before the season starts but he is. Your getting the best 7 years of marner vs a couple more before JT starts declining , that’s why Marner deserves the same 11 that JT is getting.
Marner deserves the same as Mathews and 11.6 over 5 is about the equivalent of 12 and change over 7.
Not his fault the leafs gave 2 big contracts before him and thought he’d be a sub 10mil contract, maybe Babcock shoulda kept him buried in the bottom six till they extended him.

Yeah as I said, Tavares and marner both benefit from playing together. More so Marner than the other way around
