Bob Mckenzie thinks the Leafs are waiting for the offer sheet

Quote
As for Marner, my view from afar is that it’s probably close to or at the point where TOR hopes an offer sheet is tendered. That would allow/force closure, one way or the other. Match the offer sheet or take the compensation, but it would be done.

Leafs are praying a team like Columbus does it so they get 4 top 10 picks. replacing marners value with 4 20-30oa picks would be pretty unlikely.

leafs are looking at aho deal like yeah somebody sign marner to an offersheet for like 1.5m less then what hes asking please do us a favor

i think marner wants too much money for that to happen and the 4 picks is scaring teams away thats an insane amount of 1st round picks for one player
imo the offersheets not going to come until all the other RFA are signed and thats if a teams really depserate why give up 4 1sts when you can OS another rfa that will make an impact and give up way less picks
sure marner is the top guy out there but lets be real there is plenty of good unsigned RFA right now that you could offersheet and give a lot less compensation for and improve your team quite a bit

and unless marner doesnt want to play in toronto the moment he drops his asking price leafs are going to get that shit done so if hes willing to drop for an offersheet i dont see how a deal doesnt get worked out with the leafs beforehand

The most recent offer sheets were structured to hurt the receiving team, but the Leafs have a bottomless pit of money. And I highly doubt the Leafs wouldn't move other parts (e.g. dump Ceci) to make room. So the offering team has to overpay cap-wise AND hand over their 1st rounders. Which is a really shitty bargain.

This, theres no way we dont sign him but at lets say 10m thats still way too much in big contracts.

The nylandercontract is awful and next year we will have damn near 0 defence.

If you sign marner to an overpriced 1year do you still get RFA rights at he end?

Yes , 4 years and less he’s rfa, 5 or more he’s ufa. Why would you want to go though this all again next year? He can file arbitration next year I believe if you did. He’s worth every cent of 10mil, that’s a bargain in fact.

this + there is compensation amount for certain cap hits and since marner wants to be like highest paid player in the nhl the compensation is 4 1st rounders
like $8,454,872 - $10,568,589 is 2 1sts+2nd+3rd
6,341,153 - $8,454,871 1st+2nd+3rd
$4,227,438 - $6,341,152 1st+3rd
$10,568,590+ =4 1sts

That's ridiculous lol
What team would do that
Severely damage their future and have one of the highest paid players in the league on top of it
