1. Why wouldn't players be able to waive their NMC to make them eligible to be selected by Seattle? It's a clause that they are allowed to enact or dismiss however they please.
2. NMCs and NTCs aren't carried over to the new team when a player is traded. The new team and the player can agree to uphold the clause if they want, but the team isn't obligated to do so. If Lucic is traded to the Canucks, they aren't going to honor his NMC and he'll know that going into it (which might kill the deal).
NMC is still carried over to the new team and must be honored til rest of the contract. So it doesn't matter if he waives it to go to a different team, he has NMC throughout his entire contract.
This means Lucic cannot be sent down to be buried in minors, waived, traded without his permission again with the Canucks.
That's why subban and some other players that had NMC kicking in were traded right before it became valid.
Another example is when Boyle signed an extension with Lightning only with a NTC, but when the new owners took over they didn't wanna pay him anymore. Basically the team/GM had him by the balls and told him to waive his NTC to SJ or get fucked by getting waived and get picked up to a shit team. Which forced Boyle to waive his NTC, but if he had an NMC he coulda told the GM to go fuck himself.
LE on the other hand only had NMC in his first 2 years which ran out, so he can still be sent down to minors, waived, and doesn't have to be protected in expansion draft and get the boyle treatment but benning is such a noice guy. Only NMC will require teams to be forced to protect the player.
