Holland would be sweet but.....Holland rode the coattails of fortuitous late round picks, once they’ve all retired & since landing in the eastern conference, no playoffs.

Where would Detroit have been without Lidstrom, Datsyuk & Zetterberg?

Likely where they are now.

Just pointing that out. :ph34r:

Also, I don’t put too much merit on it. We were allegedly going after McCrimmon pretty hard and he just signed on as LV GM soo.

Well Chiarelli rode coattails and was hired pretty easily, doubt the Oilers are capable of learning a lesson.

Here’s to another decade of bottom feeding!

Chiarelli has had more GM success than Holland has had the last decade.

How is Holland an upgrade?

Sadly though. I don’t like any of the choices Edmonton’s looking at.

Well to be fair we moved in 2013-14, and the playoff streak ended in 16-17... But yeah holland has definitely had some questionable signings and a not so great track record down the stretch, however, much of his decisions were being made from ownership and he was told to do whatever it took to 'extend the streak'. after Mr. Illitch died that pressure on him to 'just get in' was somewhat lifted and he made some pretty darn good trades... Plus his previous history of tremendous success in the late 90's early 2000's, not saying he's the man for the job, but he is definitely a lot betther than he often gets credit for

Have you seen his signings & trades;

It’s still not known how recent top picks like Michael Rasumussen and Filip Zadina will turn out. But that’s not a huge haul of talent though from ten drafts. It didn’t help that Holland traded away two useful centres in Jarnkrock and Janmark-Nylen for veteran players, depleting his Detroit roster in a key position.
When it comes to contracts, Holland has had a weak team with a high cap hit for years now, partly because he’s overpaid in a major way on numerous deals, including Trevor Daley (three years at $3 million per in July 2017), Frans Nielson (five years at $5.25 million per in July 2016), Darren Helm (five years at $3.85 million per in July 2016), Justin Abdelkader (seven years at $4.25 million per in Nov. 2015), and Stephen Weiss (five years at $4.9 million in July 2013).
There were also some bad trades, in particular moving a 21-year-old Jarnkrock for an aging and ineffective 33-year-old David Legwand in 2014.

Like i said im well aware of his missteps, however its well known among the red wings fan base that there was significant pressure from ownership to sign veteran contracts to do everything possible to make the playoffs. By the time the streak ended we were already paying heavily for these bad contracts. Look at his last few years as a more accurate example of what to expect from him as a GM. The last few years after the wheels had finally fallen off, the pressure on him to sign these veteran contracts, trade for older players, had been lifted and he made some pretty decent trades, and had committed to the youth movement that should have been committed to long ago, yet it just wasnt going to happen with the pressure from ownership to favor the vets, and push to keep the playoff streak alive.

Literally all of your examples (except for Ras and Zadina) were all done to keep the playoff streak going, oh and daley and nielsen. But those signings were made before the passing of Mr. Illitch.

Well. I’m now just curious to see what Holland’s going to do. He does have a nicer resume than most others we’ve looked at. So who knows.

Holland is out of the country, returning Saturday night and the potential of him becoming the next GM of the Oilers likely determined in the next few days.
