Yeah, but it's bsns at the end of the day and it's gm duty to make tough decisions and not take everything a player says to heart until they have a promise signed or some shit.

If tavares says don't trade me, I wanna stay. Then the gm should respond with, okay let's get that new contract signed then and out of the way. If there's rarely any progress after 12+ months, u should at least suspect that there's a high chance of losing him for nothing, and try to trade him his rights.

Kinda like what Sens are doing, ek says he wanted to stay last year etc. However it didn't stop Ottawa exploring all options and just expect him to sign with Sens next year when his contract is up.
