expansion teams are usually really bad, so they needed a way to make them less shitty.

vegas was very successful because a combination of few things, including mcphee using his brain and holding the league hostage with a 500IQ play.

“McPhee did it by not agreeing to side deals with teams unless they also pledged to not make deals with other teams. He lined most deals up early, essentially closing off the other escape or pressure-relief valves for those teams, restricting their ability to find help elsewhere — and then in turn the rest of the market."

a lot of ppl thought vegas wouldnt be as good either, since it was team full of rejects that the team's couldnt protect and didn't make the cut by 1.

no one expected william karlsson to explode and score 43 goals and 78pts. Marchessault to be a 75pt player, perron the 3rd best player etc.

penguins making the wrong move by keeping murray over fleury , u just gotta laugh cuz fleury carried vegas so fuckin hard

i dont think seattle would be as good, (then again, it's the NHL el oh el some never learn) now that a lot of teams can be more prepared for it, not over trade, give ton of assets away than necessary, like ducks wanted to keep Manson AND Vatanen so they offered to give Vegas theodore so they promise not to take the other two.

also why would patrick be exposed? i think they'll protect him and expose someone else

im looking at the calculator apparently patrick doesnt have enough GP it says 27/54 according to capgeek so that could be a relief
but right now im doing the calc its giroux hayes couts konecny jvr lindblom aube-kubel on the d i got provorov myers+sanheim and hart as the goalie thats 7-3-1
that leaves braun+hagg exposed which isnt tooo bad
IF patrick qualifies it comes down to like him or lindblom also being exposed IF we pick up a d man which is pretty sketch i can live with aube kubel braun or hagg being exposed though if we grab a d man or ship one of them back even better
patrick and lindblom are boith kinda interesting though patrick obviously has the skill but his "headache syndrome" has made him take a step backwards and pre cancer diagnosis lindblom was looking like one of our best players

we dont seem too bad i guess we probably lose braun or aube kubel but things can get a lot worse real fast if patrick qualifies and fletcher makes a trade but as is i can live with it i guess

Funny how some of these trades worked out

Panthers gave Smith so Knights would take Marchissault... to protect Pysyk and Petrovic lmao

Jackets gave a 1st rounder so they'd take Karlsson... to protect Anderson, who got traded for fucking Domi lmao. the 1st rounder? the knights flipped it into a higher pick to draft Nick Suzuki, who got packaged with Tatar to trade for Pacioretty.

then the Wild gave Tuch so the Knights would pick Haula, just so they wouldn't pick old man Staal... wot

I use this https://www.capfriendly.com/expansion-draft/seattle

Seems like Patrick is eligible for the draft

I would expose voracek, cuz i dont think seattle would take him cuz he's 8.2m caphit for the next FOUR years. On top of 5mil signing bonus after next season might deter the owner from wanting that in case their team doesn't succeed right off the bat like vegas did. If they did take him, it's a loss but also a huge cap relief and don't have to worry about potential anchor contract in the future. Plus, it gives Sandin a chance. I also think much younger guy like Aube will be more alluring for Seattle to take. He's cheap for now, still cost controlled for next contract, and he seems like a huge part of your team's future core. Laughton is probably safe unprotected cuz he's pending UFA.

Exposing voracek might force seattle to take your exposed dmen like hagg/braun/ghost etc.

i never had voracek on the protect list but he should be
and yeah hes got a big contract.. hes a good player i think they would take him 100% lol
pretty much we lose somebody pretty solid even if we dont make a trade but if we make a trade to bring in a top 4 were exposing even more

its just not fair to teams with depth like your forced to give up depth and replace it so some other team doesnt have to work for a team
teams go through rebuilds all the time and look at the sabers they have been for a decade your going to have an expansion team come in and be better then the sabers? how is that fair what so ever
why dont we just do expansion drafts every year to make the shitty gms and teams not shit its only fair just let them draft nhl palyers off teams with actual nhl rosters and make those teams fill out with lesser playesr evening the fied

and it prevents teams from making moves to try and win the cup... that should NEVER be a thing you want as many teams as possible contending not holding back cause of the expansion draft... thats how u know its broken

It's up to the GM to figure out and plan ahead, it's not like the NHL just said surprise seattle is coming tmr! They gave few years notice for them to plan ahead. I agree it sux but it's fair as it can be cuz i definitely dont wanna see a new team be trash for a long time and be bottom feeders to skew stats. They'll end up being deadmonton/buffalo rebuild 2.0 and the worst part is they don't have a choice like they did, intentionally tanking for high picks

Your team lost Bellemare to Vegas, Caps lost Schmidt and still won the cup the following year. So if your team is deep af, you'll still win despite losing a good player, if your team is shit, u don't lose a game changer in a positive way, (sibsa was definitely a game changer, just the for the wrong team, costing vegas the cup jajaja)

Look at vegas draft, it looks really bad on paper, the team is literally just 4 lines of 3rd/4th liners. They're lucky they were gifted MAF instead of Murr, i think that's their best player they got through the draft lol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_NHL_Expansion_Draft

I think if the NHL teams learned from Vegas draft, the key is to just accept losing your borderline guy that you couldn't protect, instead of offering more picks and prospects to have a verbal agreement to not take x player, while giving the better players away for it.

I dont even think Vegas intital drafted roster is better than buffalo's core rn. It's their fault for following deadmonton's model of rebuild, intentionally tanking for your future core guys, they at least succeeded in that, cuz their core is insane. However i think it's reallllly tough to get rid of the bad habits of giving up early, losing's ok mentality, especially to the younger players. There is no way Kraken will have a better core/roster than buffalo's core.. but they definitely have a better chance of being the better team soley cuz their environment in the locker-room will be like "damn we rejects, let's prove em wrong and try our best to win" while buffalo is currently like "fuck this season, we a joke, let's play free and loose" teaching dahlin it's okay, everything will be fine next year =)

bellmare was literally our PK and a leadership guy he might not look like a big loss on paper but a good faceoff and defensive guy from our 1st pk unit is a pretty big loss when you dont have a guy equally good to replace him
vegas might look like 3rd and 4th liners on paper because they were on deep teams with better players ahead of them bumping them down to that position which is often he case on contending teams with depth
but when given the extra toi they were able to hit their potential i wasnt very surprised i didnt think they would go to the finals but i figured they could content for playoffs they had a really deep team and some guys with pretty good potential
gms might have learned but there is a lot of new gms on new teams since then whos to say they dont make the same mistakes? or gms that were bottom half of the league but now have a good team with depth and might be in that situation the first time

e: i just want to say bellmare was a big loss for philly but other teams did lose more not saying he was the biggest loss in the league to the draft or anything

probably because only having a team of washed up old free agents and a bunch of 17-19 y/o draft picks would make them non competitive for a decade. which kills ticket sales and could lead to a failed franchise. Not a good look for the NHL and financially very damaging.

Vast majority of youngins need years of AHL experience to develop properly, only generational talents like Crosby,McDavid, OV are the exceptions.

I think a fair compromise would be the NHL drafts the later 90's teams like the Preds, Panthers and blue jackets got.

They could still pick some value, and enough vets to fill a roster, bad enough to get good picks and let the Kids stay in the AHL for a few years.
All while causing only minor/ no damage to existing franchises, In fact some of them benefited by shedding bloated contracts.

Vegas was bullshit.
