to be completely honest, ive lived in st louis my whole life and and when that ferguson shit happened, i was like "where is ferguson, mo?"

if st louis didnt seperate their city from their county (something almost every other city in america doesnt do), the numbers would more accurately represent and compare st louis to everyone else.

cant blame the county and surrounding metro area (2.5mil ppl) for not wanting to be associated with the city (300k ppl), but you can see what skews the numbers.

I wonder if there is a demographic difference between the city and county that would explain why the violent crimes committed are so much higher in the city?

there are quite a few articles on this if you look for em. i was recently reading one based on employment rate, income %age vs crime rate and violent crimes vs petty crimes.

st. louis separating the city vs the county definitely skews the numbers, but it is what it is.

STL will always be my home.

nah......

in all seriousness, the 5 o clock news is a daily half hour reminder to not venture into north city.

really like 90% of the shit occurs in like a 15 block radius.

yep, but that stupid seperation not only negatively skews the numbers, but it REALLY stunts the growth of our metro area because everything has to be passed through the hundreds of small municipalities and no one agrees on things.

thats why our airport, public transportation, and other things suck

Generally the larger cities have crime rates that are higher vs rural areas because the cost of living is higher and there is more potential targets to victimize due to the increased density.

You have to look closely at the type of jobs people have. It really drives me crazy how the unemployment rate is usually just looked at as a percentage.

There is so much more to the story. Unemployment can be low, but if a larger chunk of those jobs are made of minimum wage and/or part time jobs with little in terms of benefits or security you are still going to have the same problems cities with high unemployment rates have.

Sadly politicians will brag about low unemployment numbers or total number of jobs created when those figures alone are a very poor indicator of the economic prosperity of a city, State, Country etc. It really annoys me how those numbers are frequently manipulated.
