Alright, so i created this post few yrs back before the Avs won their cup when Sakic was their GM.
https://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=84136328&f=203

Some of you said until Sakic wins a cup, there's no discussion/yzerman all the way.

Now that they both won the cup with their respective teams, and had more than enough time with their new teams, is still yzerman considered yzergod?!
I personally think he's more of a yzerfraud these days, i still think he should've drafted Benson over Danielson. I thought he was lookin for guys with that OOOMPH factor, rather than a safe high floor typa guy.
Sakic is no longer the GM, and got promoted to POHO for the Avs after winning the cup. This dude is just badass man.

Anyways, what do d2jsp community think btwn the two? It's awesome these guys competed on ice and they did it off ice too lol.

Probably bias, but still gotta go with Yzerman... if... I had to rank #1/#2
Both are legends.
Some teams are constructed for "a run"
Yzerman has always been a Dynasty guy.
I like that, committing to a team long term, rather than stitching a couple contracts together for a quick shot or bust.(not that this is what Sakic is doing, just sayin)
But again super bias - My cousin was the 2nd Bruise brother so....
Been watching more Yzerman than Sackic my entire life.
Excellent question, and one that can surely have at least 3 correct answers :)

tbh i would say both of them are fairly even they both had some early picks that hit into superstar and carried their teams yzerman did get kuch in the 2nd round though
they both filled out depth good enough to win and both have some contracts that are kind of questionable

i dont think either are a super good amazing GM most nhl gms when getting 1st and 2nd overalls and other top 5-10 picks could build a decent roster
i feel like tampa in their prime was better then the avs currently in their prime though because they actually had an elite goalie in vasi on top of a stacked team
however if sakic managed to get an elite established #1 goalie in the next season or two that might change my opinion

who is a super good amazing GM to you then? I think they're both good GMs.

Sakic was GM in 2013 for the Avs with Patrick Roy, they selected MacKinnon over Seth Jones with their 1oa. Lots were sayin they shoulda chose Jones cuz MacKinnon didn't explode til much later.
The reason why i have Sakic over Yzerman is part of that reason as well, he kicked Roy out cuz they clashed a lot but after seeing sakic's team win cup and being competitive, it was a good choice. He bet on MacKinnon being their guy over Duchene, and most fans/hockey crowd thought Sakic was making a rookie mistake. He traded RoR for a haul, and Duchene for max value, and notably added Kadri, Toews, Nichushkin etc. through FA. Also, when they had the worst season, they didn't win the lotto for 1st overall and got 4th oa pick, but pretty much won the lotto by drafting Makar anyway. He stepped down after winning the cup in 2022. 9 yrs since he became a GM. He inherited RoR, Duchene, Landeskog.

Yzerman became the GM for tampa in 2010, and won the cup in 2015. He inherited Stammer& Hedman prior to becoming the GM for tampa. Those guys certainly helped him build the team easier around them. He gets credit for drafting kucherov, vasy, point, palat, cirelli and got sergachev through trade if i remember correctly. the 3oa he did get under his time, was drouin which turned out to be a bust for his team. I don't think he made notable draft choices after 2014 for his team, when he had higher picks. So to be fair, after 2015 winning cup and being top of the league he busted on most later high 1st round picks which is a reasonable expectation.

Yzerman became the GM for the wings in 2019, 5 yrs so it's safe to say detroit wings are his team now. He didn't get the luxury to inherit the likes of stammer/hedman this time, as Larkin is basically the only dude he got. The most notable players he drafted so far are Seider, Raymond, Cossa, Kasper, ASP, and Danielson. He did his usual strategy during the tampa days where he sold off his assets for a bunch of high picks. However, I dont think he hit anyone relevant in the later rounds, like he did with this tampa scouting team.

it depends how far back i guess idk in recent times off the top of my head probably whoever was the wings GM when they made the playoffs for like 15 years straight or whatever it was
they weren't exactly landing top 5 picks and stayed competitive all those years and landed guys like datsyuk in the 6th round zetterberg in the 7th who were huge pieces
