The team who had the ball, in desperation, laterally passed the ball back and forth in a last ditch effort to try to score with no time left on the clock. They somehow went backwards for 35 yards to end in their own goal and result in a “safety,” which gives the opposing team 2 points, thus making the final score 47-42


To answer your question, you can pass the ball backwards or laterally even if you’re not the QB
